18 May Accelleran dRAX™ and Accelleran Radio Units enable ONF Aether™ first Open Source Platform for 5G/LTE Edge-Cloud-as-a-Service
Accelleran dRAX™ together with Accelleran Radio Units enable ONF’s Aether. The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) announced last March, Aether™ – the first open source platform for delivering Enterprise 5G/LTE-Edge-Cloud-as-a-Service.
Aether provides mobile connectivity and edge cloud services for distributed enterprise networks, all provisioned and managed from a centralized cloud. Based on open source components and optimized for cloud deployments, Aether simultaneously supports deployment on licensed (4G/5G) and unlicensed (CBRS) spectrum. Aether is easy to deploy, highly scalable and designed for rapid edge service onboarding in a multi-cloud environment. Aether is a key enabling platform for enterprise digital transformation and is making possible a wide range of new business models for how enterprise networks are built, deployed and operated.
At the Edge of the ONF´s Aether components sits, implementing vRAN CU functions, the Accelleran dRAX™ Intelligent Control Plane vRAN solution controlling the cluster of Radio Units.

- Cloud-Native NFV/SDN vRAN
The lightweight dRAX™ components are cloud-native VNFs, available as containers (Docker for Kubernetes) and VMs (Openstack). Functional deployment at the RU, edge or cloud can be decided by orchestration at run-time.
- Open Orchestration & Data APIs
dRAX™ is open. Orchestration supports the industry preferred NFV/SDN framework APIs above and the NIB (Network Information Base) data APIs support industry standards and best practices (NFV/SDN, O-RAN, OAM, 3GPP, Netconf/Yang, …).
- 4G today, roadmap to 5G SA
dRAX™ is field-proven today for 4G LTE M2M and IoT roll-outs. A committed roadmap, in development today, towards 5G NSA (r15) and aligned with the O-RAN Alliance architecture evolution is just a software update away. 5G SA (r16) will follow shortly afterwards then r17.
- Extensible RIC xApps
Extending the dRAX™ RIC via xApps and accessing the control plane NIB ‘big data’ is ongoing through our by partners and 3rd parties, bringing added-value and enabling vRAN innovation.
